What "anonymous" means on videomegle

There is nothing to fill in before you start. No username, no email address, no phone number, no profile picture. You appear to the other person as a stranger and they appear to you the same way. Nothing connects one conversation to the next: when either of you presses Next, the match is over and there is no way to look the other person up, message them again, or see whether they are still online.

That is the whole design. Most "anonymous" apps still sit on top of an account, which means a real identity exists somewhere and the anonymity is only a display setting. Here there is no account underneath to reveal.

What the other person can learn about you

Mostly, what you choose to show them. In text mode that is the words you type and nothing else. In voice mode it is your voice. In video mode it is your face and whatever is visible behind you, which is more than people expect: post on a desk, a uniform, the view from a window.

There is one technical detail worth knowing, because most sites do not mention it. Video and voice calls connect your browser directly to the other person's browser. That is what keeps the picture sharp and the delay short, but a direct connection means each device learns the other's IP address, exactly as in any peer-to-peer call. An IP address usually reveals a rough area and an internet provider. It does not reveal a name or a street address, and most people you meet will never look at it.

Text mode works differently. Messages are passed along by our server and no direct connection between the two of you is ever opened, so the other person's device never sees your address at all. If that distinction matters to you, text is the most anonymous way to use the site.

What we can see

We do not ask who you are, and with no accounts there is nothing to attach a history to. Chat messages are relayed as they are sent and are not saved. Video and audio normally travel straight between the two browsers without passing through us; when a network will not allow that, the call goes through a relay in encrypted form and is not recorded.

Like almost every website, we keep basic visit statistics so we can tell how the service is used: which pages were opened, the type of device, the site that referred you, and an approximate location worked out from the IP address. Your browser also stores a random identifier that lets us tell a returning visit from a new one. It is not linked to a name, because we never have one.

Where anonymity stops

The site cannot protect details you hand over yourself. A first name plus a city plus a school is often enough to find someone, and a social media handle removes the anonymity completely. The other person can also screenshot a text chat or record their screen during a video call, and nothing on any website can prevent that. A useful rule is to say and show only what you would be comfortable seeing again later.

Anonymous to other users also does not mean beyond the reach of the law. Threats, harassment and anything involving minors are crimes whether or not a name is attached. There is more practical advice on the safety page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to give a name or email to chat?

No. There is no registration of any kind. You choose a mode and are matched with whoever else is waiting.

Can the stranger see my IP address?

In video and voice modes the two browsers connect directly, so each device learns the other IP address, as in any peer-to-peer call. In text mode messages go through our server and the other person never sees it.

Are my chats recorded?

Not by us. Messages are relayed and not saved, and calls are not recorded. The other person could still take a screenshot or record their own screen, so share only what you are comfortable with.

Can I use videomegle with a VPN?

Text chat works normally over a VPN. Video and voice usually work too, although some VPNs block direct connections, in which case the call is relayed or may fail to connect.
